NFL Week 2: The Good, The Bad, the Ugly!!

New England Dominates Favre-Powered Jets Without Tom Brady, Jacksonville Falls to 0-2, San Diego Loses on Blown Call, Dallas Overpowers Eagles
Ravens fans, listen carefully, stop whining. The NFL was not out to screw Baltimore in how they handled the postponement of Sunday’s game. Should they have seen the need to move the game past this weekend? Probably, those who think the solution to just switch the date to Baltimore are asking the league to make a decision that clearly favored Baltimore. Yes, the NFL did that switcheroo to the New Orleans’ Saints after Katrina having them play their first game after the storm in New Jersey against the Giants, but it was clear New Orleans was going to be a road team for the whole year anyway. It will be tough for the Ravens and Texans to get their weekend off so early. What was the NFL supposed to do? It’s not as easy to move around pieces of the schedule once the season has started if for no other reason than just the logistics of all the personnel and materials that have to be ready to go at game time each weekend. Folks, it’s not like a family moving its vacation from one week to another. Some things are bigger than football. Get on your wobbly knees and pray for the folks whose lives have been turned inside out in Texas. It’s just a game, you fools. As we’re found of saying at RMF, “Deal with it!”

If anyone looked at our picks for guidance, you’re probably not too happy with our selections, but 8-7 is still a winning record! Let’s look at a few games and see what’s going on.

First, we picked Cincinnati to beat Tennessee figuring the Vince Young saga would take its toll. Sure Cincinnati looked horrible against the Ravens, but how horrible? They couldn’t beat the Titans. Enough said.

The next game featured Buffalo’s visit to Jacksonville. Jack Del Rio’s Jaguar’s squad looked so powerful at the end of last season. Buffalo’s one of those upstart teams that many are touting as destined for good things this year – a great match up. Jacksonville, especially playing at home looked like the obvious victor, but a lively Buffalo squad took care of business.

Oakland’s visit to Kansas City was assuredly one of those games we’d love to mock as the “Toilet Bowl” of the week. Oakland looked so disjointed and miserable in all facets of the game in their debut against Denver, how could they go on the road and beat anyone? Well meet Kansas City, they might not be as glaring in their deficiencies but they’re not a good team. Next spring, they’ll both be claiming top draft picks for sure.

Indianapolis beat Minnesota as predicted. The Colts haven’t gotten back to full power yet but were good enough to beat the Vikings. The Vikings, a team with promise at the start are now 0-2. Their work gets tougher to take this division as Green Bay is doing just fine without Louisiana Lightening and the Bears might not be so bad.

Carolina beat Chicago as expected in a close battle. The worst of this was having to hear that ass, Chris Berman, celebrate Jake “might come but they wanna” Delholme. For God’s sake, can some network put something on with the quality analysis ESPN provides. Enough of the “Chris Berman Comedy Hour.” Having watched Fox’s coverage pregame and postgame yesterday, their whole show is full of garbage. Their panelists are good fellows who know their stuff but all the comedy routines and Jillian Reynolds is just too much to handle. CBS has the best pre and postgame coverage simply because they’re more professional than the rest. Bless ‘em.

Green Bay clobbered Detroit and the New York Giants whacked St. Louis – no surprises.

Washington beat New Orleans. Jason Campbell looked pretty strong. The Washington defense was good enough to hold off New Orleans’ strong offensive attack which played a very average game. The big story though is how much offense the Redskins generated at FedEx field. In a division with the Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants, they must dominate their non-Divisional games to have any prayers for playoff action. This time they did it.

Atlanta fell far short of Tampa Bay as expected, no real news in this contest.

Possibly the upset of the game would be San Francisco’s trip up the coast to be one field goal better than a highly-favored Seattle team. Mike Holmgren and crew will have much to review to get Seattle ready for its next game. They were a mess against an obviously weaker team.

New England showed just how powerful the New England game plan and team discipline can be. They went on the road after losing MVP Quarterback, Tom Brady to fight the pumped up New York Jets with Brett Favre leading their offense, but won convincingly controlling the game on both sides of the football. Favre didn’t play poorly. New England just had everything going that Cassel’s inexperience didn’t seem to matter. They have so many ways to adjust and every player knows his roll. The Patriots truly are the team of this decade in all major sports. Ugh!

San Diego’s visit to Denver provided controversy for the ages as a blown call cost the Chargers a likely victory. A fumble called as an incomplete pass gave Denver one more chance to score a touchdown and win the game on a two-point conversion. San Diego got shafted and now sits with Kansas City at 0-2 at the bottom of the division. Meanwhile, Denver’s up top at 2-0. The other big loser is NFL official, Ed Hochuli, who acknowledged he blew the call after the game. What better defines an ugly loss?

Arizona beat Miami, no surprises. The QB talk will continue in Sun Valley. Likewise, Pittsburgh travelled up the turnpike to Cleveland. In a battle where defense ruled, they kept the Browns all locked up unable to budge. Pittsburgh marches on and might be the AFC’s team to beat this year. It’s too soon for that hype, but this proves how strong they are in their division. The best news for their foes is Big Ben and crew only scored ten points to win. Translation, Baltimore’s heavy defense could rub their noses in the turf and beat them in a field goal contest.

It was wishful thinking on our part for Philadelphia to beat Dallas, but what a game anyway!! The Cowboys beat the Eagles 41-37 in a game where both teams played with so much knockdown high potency power. Perhaps the sign to both teams would be what about defense as such a high scoring game has to make opponents look for where the holes are in these two top-notch teams’ defensive abilities. When everyone’s healthy, these are two superb offensive units.

Though RMF only went 8-7 with our picks this week, there are only a few that are huge surprises. Two weeks into the season, the biggest surprises would seem to be both San Diego and Jacksonville starting at 0-2. Everything else so far seems within the plausible domain for sure.
