Thank You, Uno!!!

We sadly note that Uno’s reign as top dog is about to conclude as the Westminster Kennel Club is about to celebrate its annual tournament to select the most celebrated canine of the year.

What a joy it was to see Uno, the lovable and seemingly defiant Beagle, an everyman’s breed of dog, no designer or exotic yuppie or royal specialty breed take top honors last year. Especially enjoyable was that Uno was a beagle through and through. Sure he performed the obligatory rituals flawlessly, but he never surrendered his “beagle-ness” throughout. Uno took on each task with the usual “glad to please” attitude that the breed is famous for, but there was also a little sparkle in his eyes that seemed to suggest, “you’re going to owe me” for this.

In the heat of the Presidential primary, while John McCain, Hilary Clinton, and Barack Obama fought to see who would be elected top dog in November, for millions of dog lovers nationwide for at least that shining moment, the answer was clear, Uno.

Uno would appear on all the required television shows. Did Bill O’Reilly feel slighted that Uno was never the lead interview on “The Factor.” Thankfully, our beloved opinionated Irishman did not send pain-in-the-ass producer, Jesse Walters to attempt an ambush interview of the dogged celebrity.

Surely, if Uno had been invited to sing the national anthem at a major sporting event, he would have done much better than many of today’s pop music sensations who do so.

Alas, another pooch will be picked this week, and it’s hard to imagine any of the finalists will come close to capturing our hearts the way Uno did. While it’s unlikely another beagle will be top dog for decades, can we at least hold out hopes for a good old Labrador retriever. Perhaps Laura Ingraham can get her prime pooch, Lucy, to opine on the matter.
