Much attention has been focused on the increased use of maple bats which provide batters with a lighter weight softer wood that supposedly increases bat speed. The danger is the softer bats are much more prone to shattering sending fast-flying wooden scraps where fans, coaches, and other players are in harm's way. This is becoming an increasingly louder safety concern. Will something be done proactively or will it take a human tragedy to address the issue?
