There’s No “I” in Team: Maybe NASCAR Needs to Spell “Team” Differently
Let’s see, tiem, teim, teighm…. We need something, because when it comes to NASCAR drivers, there sure as heck is an “I” in team. Just look at what’s been going on in 2001. Is the feud between Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch cooling off? You’d sure think that would happen when Mr. Team himself, Joe Gibbs runs the operation. Kasey Kahne and A.J. Allmendinger are not getting along too well these days, are they? From time to time, spats develop within the Roush stable.
Of course, we heard Jeff Gordon tell it straight to the network cameras and microphones, he is “pissed off.” He’s not talking about Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, or some brash rookie. He’s talking about the only other active driver with four championships, and the fellow whose car he has an ownership stake, Jimmie Johnson.
Call it a family feud or just “that’s racin’ boys,” the take the gloves off spirit NASCAR is tolerating this year and the huge field trying to secure valuable top 12 “Chase contender” sports has everyone who wears a helmet just a little testy as the summer part of the season warms up.
These battles aren’t usually between chumps. These are guys who have turf to protect or much ground to make up and are feeling the pressure. This translates into crazier racing on the track and livelier post race broadcasts.
