Does anybody take Lifetime network seriously? That was the cable network supposed to provide programs on women's issues and concerns. In truth, if this network were seriously taken as representing American women, every man in the country would go berserko to demand the 19th Amendment be immediately rescinded and some might even resort to Talibanic style thinking. It is mindless fluff for minds of mindless fluff.
Now they have their own movie channel. As if the term "chick flick" isn't scary enough, later this month they will debut a movie, surely one in the sickly docudrama form, titled, "Natalee Holloway (based on a true story)."
The Natalee Holloway tragedy is a heartbreaking tale of an Alabama honors student destined for pre-med school who vanished toward the end of a trip to Aruba with members of her graduating class to celebrate completing school. While the story has never been officially resolved, all indications is that Aruban teenager, the most vile and narcissistic person so young one could imagine, Joran Van Der Sloot was responsible for either her death or sale as a sex slave. No body has been recovered despite numerous exhaustive searches of the tiny island, but a body dumped in the sea could be easily devoured by sharks leaving no discernible remains.
Such a tragedy does not deserve such crude explotation by the television industry, but who can be surprised when movies are made like Oliver Stones' slam on George W. Bush or all made-for-TV movies that air almost immediately after a long list of tragedies. There's no end to the lack of decency or scupples the media will fall to.
Thank God there is no similar channel pandering to male tastes though at times one has to wonder what ESPN is up to.
