The 2009 Ravens’ schedule has been announced and surely Baltimore sports fans will see some conspiracy theory at the hands of the NFL or the television networks designed to foil their success after coming within one game of the Super Bowl in 2008.
The schedule is as follows:
Sunday, 9/13 Kansas City, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 9/20 at San Diego, 4:15 pm
Sunday, 9/27 Cleveland, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 10/4 at New England, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 10/11 Cincinnati Bengals, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 10/18 at Minnesota, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 10/25 BYE
Sunday, 11/1 Denver, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 11/8 at Cincinnati, 1:00 pm
Monday 11/16 at Cleveland, 8:30 pm
Sunday, 11/22 Indianapolis, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 11/29 Pittsburgh, 8:20 pm
Monday, 12/7 at Green Bay, 8:30 pm
Sunday, 12/13 Detroit Lions, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 12/20 Chicago, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 12/27 at Pittsburgh, 1:00 pm
Sunday, 1/3 at Oakland, 4:15 pm
The Ravens requested that they wanted to avoid playing another prime time game in Pittsburgh this year. Their request was honored. Currently, they have three prime time games, two away games on ESPN Monday Night Football and one at home against the Steelers on NBC with the John Madden war wagon in the parking lot. The AFC west is their conference divisional opponent this year while the out of conference schedule will be against the NFC north. Indianapolis and New England are on the schedule as part of the power scheduling facing the other two conference second place teams.
This looks like a schedule that distributes the pain pretty evenly through out the season but holds games against the dreaded Pittsburgh Steelers into late November, week 12 and then off to where they like cole slaw and fries on their sandwiches not with their sandwiches on 12/27, the 16th week of the season.
If the Ravens make it to the bye week at 5-1, fans can begin looking at another playoff run for 2009. If they’re 6-0 beating New England, it will be one big party in Crab Town this fall.
Will the Ravens finally figure out Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts who’ve had their number in recent years and can the Ravens possibly win at least one of their two games against the terrible towel toting Steelers? If they succeed at these pursuits, taking the next step toward football immortality could be theirs.
As the team continues to reshuffle and reload its roster for 2009, all indications show Ozzie Newsome being up to the challenge despite losing Bart Scott, Jim Leonard, and Jason Young. Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs are back to join forces with Ed Reed and the rest of the lethal Ravens defense. Matt Birk joins as the team’s center, quite possibly an upgrade over departed Young. Chris Carr and Dominque Foxworth join the defensive backs to rebuild and beef up the secondary after losing Chris McAllister.
The draft and perhaps a trade or free agent signing remain as the Ravens sure could use that stud receiver who could serve as Joe Flacco’s money guy in the passing game.
Given the doubts fans had with the list of pending free agents at the end of the 2008 season, entering the NFL draft later this month, the Baltimore Ravens look just as strong but more experienced ready to move forward in 2009.
