In Sprint Cup racing, there’s the Daytona 500, the Chase (the
final ten races of the season which determine the championship) and
the rest of the season. The rest of the season begins tomorrow.
Little from the Daytona 500 has much to do with the outcome of moving
on to Phoenix other than introducing new team alignments for the 2012
season and all the new paint schemes. Perhaps it is no wonder then,
that the old and familiar in new places is the starting point for
tomorrow’s Subway 500, actually a 312 lap, 312 mile race measured
in kilometers.
Mark Martin in his new ride, the #55 Aaron’s Toyota for Michael
Waltrip Racing sits on the pole highlighting the crafty old veteran
with his new team. He smoked the field in qualifying, an especially
difficult endeavor this day, only the second race on the new Phoenix
surface and configuration where many cars had trouble gauging their
setup.
