Brighter Days In Bird Land?

Considering the Orioles were only able to win two of their first eightteen games, have fans paused to realize that they've now won five out of their last seven games during a twelve game stretch against the Yankees and Red Sox. They swept the Red Sox for the first time since 1974 in a three game home series.

Ty Wigginton who didn't have a position in the lineup at the start of the season is leading the assault with eight homers and fifteen RBI's.

While O's fans can rejoice that their most vexing nemisis has been dealt three straight losses, the Red Sox are in 4th place so far this year struggling tremendously not looking like the Sox who've had their way with the Orioles in recent years. The test gets more difficult as they head to New York to face the Yankees for three games and then for four games in Minnesota where the Twins are having a lot of fun in their new baseball only stadium. This will be the O's only visit to the Twin Cities in 2010.

Meanwhile, just down I-95 a short distance, perhaps the real baseball joy for 2010 in this region resides in Washington, DC where the Nationals are 13-12 despite losing their last two games down in Miami against the Marlins.

The Orioles have some serious concerns that remain to be answered, but in professional sports, winning cures most ills. There's still no conjecture when Brian Roberts will be ready to resume his post at second base and leading off while the team continues to audition for closer as Michael Gonzalez's status remains uncertain.

Next challenge, Jeremy Guthrie faces Orioles' killer C.C. Sabathia in the Bronx.
