Sprint Cup 2010: Race 7: Rattlesnakes and Cactii -- It's Race One at Phoenix

Some improbable drivers line up in the first two rows as the Sprint Cup teams prepare for action tomorrow night for the Subway Fresh Fit 600K at Phoenix International Raceway. This will be the second race going back to using conventional spoilers instead of the aero wing which had been one of the most recognizable features of the “car of tomorrow” since its introduction.

TOP 12 Qualifiers
1. A.J. Allmendinger, #43, Ford, Valvoline
2. Scott Speed, #82, Toyota, Red Bull
3. Sam Hornish, Jr. #77, Dodge, Mobil I
4. Marcos Ambrose, #47, Toyota, Kingsford / Bush’s Beans
5. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. #88, Chevy, National Guard / Amp Energy
6. Joey Logano, #20, Toyota, Home Depot
7. Juan Montoya, #42, Chevy, Target
8. Martin Truex Jr. #56, Toyota, NAPA Auto Parts
9. Carl Edwards, #99, Ford, Subway
10. Jeff Gordon, #24, Chevy, DuPont
11. Tony Stewart, #14, Office Depot / Old Spice
12. Michael McDowell, #66, Toyota, Prism Motorsports (unsponsored)

For those checking on the champ, Jimmie Johnson starts well within striking distance in 16th position.

We must take note that the car starting in 12th position has no intention of racing competitively and will not finish the race. We wonder if the #87 Toyota of Joe Nemechek will attempt to complete the race given they show sponsorship this week. While the #26 team, now piloted by David Stremme hardly deserves much sympathy for their pathetic performance with the #26 Ford, they are prepared to complete the entire race and not drift off into the night before the first pit stop. As long as this idiot “start and park” monkey business continues, we will be complaining about it. It cheapens the sport.
