Obama: Audacity on Display in KSM Decision (or Lack of Decision)

How much obscene hubris does Barack Obama possess? If he isn’t getting the message that many Americans from all sectors have serious problems with his policies and actions, he’s either blinded by his huge ego fortified being surrounded by a bunch of opportunistic sycophants or he is such a extreme ideologue, a true believer in his cause regardless of what concerns even his party raises.

Yesterday in a pre-Super Bowl interview on CBS television with Katy Couric, she asked him, “Have you ruled out trying confessed 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York?”

"I have not ruled it out, but I think it is important for us to take into account the practical logistical issues involved," the President responded, “If you have got a city that is saying no, and a police department that is saying no, and a mayor that is saying no, that makes it difficult, we have not ruled out anything -- we will make a definitive judgment based on consultations with all the relevant authorities."

Everyone one from the figures he sited in his quote to the most liberal representatives on Capitol Hill from New York City has firmly put their fist down that a show trial in the shadow of where the World Trade Center towers once stood is unacceptable.

Even ignoring all the other issues surrounding Obama’s stance such as moving Mohammed into civilian court, what he puts at stake be seeking to conduct a trial in such an active, densely populated area shows a rigidity and failure to recognize clear political reality where he could at least put the issue behind him by simply saying something like, “In light of revelations by leaders who would be directly involved by our decision, we have agreed to looking for another tactic…”

Obama went on to argue that what he is seeking is simply nothing different than what the Bush administration had done successfully many times which surely was anything but accurate given that many of the trials President Bush had conducted under his administration were pre 9/11 terrorists before the issue required such special consideration.

The most conspicuous factor of everything involved in how the Obama administration has sought to conduct the Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is the President’s refusal to take personal responsibility for any of it. The initial decision to have the terrorist mastermind tried in civilian court and for the trial to be held in lower Manhattan was, of course the decision of Attorney General Eric Holder. As this action was subjected to greater scrutiny, the President’s responses held an undercurrent of a “don’t blame me” theme. How contrary is that to Harry Truman’s maxim of where the buck stops in Washington politics? How many right minded citizens questioned Barack Obama’s decision to appoint Eric Holder as the nation’s top law enforcement official in the first place. Follow the conversation through the Katy Couric interview and the movers of all activity on this matter are always somebody else. Isn’t it fascinating to see how assertive the President speaks while passing the buck all along the line. Clearly, no buck stops on his desk.

The Khalid Sheikh Mohammed prosecution is one of the most important symbols of how the United States conducts its war on terrorism. From top to bottom, the Obama response is blinded by his radical ideology and failure to assert the power and rightness of the United States government, tangled up in the inability to clearly articulate who the terrorists are and how they should be dealt with, and arrested by not exercising clear and effective leadership on all levels.

Barack Obama attempted to introduce the world to his ideals and persona in his book, The Audacity of Hope. One thing is certain when examining how this President handles the responsibilities of being President, what concept applies more consistently than that of audacity. While audacity on one hand connotes boldness and daring, it also suggests the impudent lack of respect for opposing points of view and established convention. Thus in Obama’s case, his audacity morphs into blind hubris and narcissism, conveying this is a man who’d sooner stand by his guns and fail instead of seeking consensus and correcting his course. One not put this on the left/right continuum to see how dangerous his behavior is.
